I am pro-life. I discovered this when I made a list of all the choices
that I believe support life. I realized this when I thought about all the ways in which our present societies neglect, disparage and destroy life.
Being pro-life is to honor, treasure and sustain life. When we make fun of the handicapped, when we fail to provide medical care for the sick and injured, when we fail to provide educational opportunities to men and women of all ages, we are not pro-life. Pro-life is respecting different lifestyles and cultures. Pro-life is supporting biodiversity. Pro-life is funding research that extends healthy and productive lives.
We are pro-life when we treat animals with respect. We are pro-life when we react intelligently to climate change and threats against the life supporting systems that preserve our fragile planetary ecosystems. We are pro-life when we are active opponents of ocean pollution, rain forest destruction and the loss of priceless biodiversity.
We are pro-life when we are vaccinated to protect others from a higher risk of death.
We are pro-life when we value the experience and wisdom of the mature and elderly. We are pro-life when we respect and support the aspirations of the young and brave.
We are pro-life when we abhor war and violence and become messengers of peace. We are pro-life when we practice rehabilitation not retribution in our prisons. We are pro-life when we give people the space to experiment, to make mistakes, to live by new inspiration, to chart new seas.
We are pro-life when we forgive each other and show concern for each other’s path in life—when we inspire, listen to, recognize each other’s needs, and love each other.
We are pro-life in all the ways “we do unto others as we would have others do unto us.”
