Too much Freedom Leads to much less Freedom
Voluntary compliance is the enemy of "big government."
Irony can be cruel. It bites back. Push aggressively ahead with certain beliefs and you advance their antithesis. You work against yourself.
For example, you believe in individual freedom. You support individual choice, not public control or mandate. Beware. The enemy of individual freedom is excessive insistence on individual freedom.
A light hand of public authority is the result of a high level of voluntary compliance with the public good. If all, or an overwhelming most, of the public do not litter, then there is no need for the government to post “Do not litter signs” and enforce them.
When the public is well informed and willing to voluntarily do what is necessary for the overall wellbeing of the community, then government need not be heavy handed.
Our freedoms depend upon a culture of mutual respect for each other and continuing efforts to do what needs to be done, without being forced to do it.
