Have you heard, it's in the stars
Next July we collide with Mars?
Well, did you ever?
What a swell party, a swell party
A swellegant, elegant party this is!
Cole Porter at his best. 1939 lyrics reprised in a 50s musical with Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. I remember humming it while in college.
I thought of this when one of my subscribers withdrew the other day. I try not to be overly partisan, but there are times when I may go over a line that I have chosen to draw. We don’t need more divisiveness, but some issues have to be called out. Vaccine denial is one and I did come down rather hard on that deviation from common sense. (More about what I mean by common sense in another blog—it isn’t all that common and it often doesn’t make sense.)
I suppose any discordant sound in a party room is, well, a discord. Keep the champaign flowing. But permanent parties are about as dangerous a form of escapism as I can imagine. And those who know me realize that I like a party.
There are better and better reasons, though, for dropping out of the party, and into the real world. There are answers to many of our social/economic problems and they should be consensus answers. Have we become so partisan that we can not accept good policies when “that other guy” is proposing them? Is that partly because our party is a “swell” party in two ways. It’s our birthright home (I grew up a ….) and the music is loud, the company elite, and the band plays on.
If the music is too loud, you're too old... as far as decisions based strictly on partisan politics, hopefully I'm understanding your common sense comments. If someone is basing ones life decisions based on what "their" someone says, I would have to say common sense is severely lacking.
